My well-informed boss and community advocate, John alerted me to this authentic store, also known familiarly as Rudi’s Continental Shop. Being locals, we are constantly in search of places to source local, nutritious food rather than purchasing our groceries at the local supermarket chains, where it is common knowledge that food is not as fresh as they might want us to believe.
Hailing from a strong genetic line of butchers, Mentges (which is Rudi’s family name and means meat butcher in German) has served pure meat and natural produce since 1260 in Germany. Rudi, following in his family footsteps, started his continental shop in 1965 by the River Mosel in Germany, near the border to France. When nuclear power testing became an agenda for the French, Rudi knew it was time to leave as the atomic power station was just 60 kilometres away from where his family lived. Having recently visited a good friend whilst holidaying in the Manning Valley in Australia, in 1989 Rudi migrated to our shores with wife Jutta and their two children. He laid his hat in Taree and quickly learned English through building a wonderfully supportive connection with the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses community.
At 67 years old, Rudi has no plans to retire and truly believes we are on this earth to serve mankind “If you have a special gift, you have to give it. And if you have a way of healing the world, then that’s your purpose. I can help with people’s health, simply by manufacturing quality natural produce”.
His produce continues the long chain of traditional continental meat products from family recipes, with genuine flavours of Germany. Rudi abides by high quality controlled standards and is continuously in search of perfection.
