Cleverman Exhibition @ Yarrawarra – Corindi Beach
After two weeks of frantic preparation, the Wadjar Indigenous Regional Galley at Corindi Beach is about to unveil its biggest exhibition. A small team has been busy painting and preparing the gallery so it will be ready for Friday’s opening of the Cleverman Exhibition, celebrating the ground-breaking and critically acclaimed Indigenous superhero series. Cleverman was shown in two series on ABC-TV in 2016 and 2017, reimagining Dreaming stories in a modern context and featured the local Gumbaynggirr language.
Now many of the images and themes from the series come together in an interactive and immersive exhibition first shown at the Australian Centre for the Moving Image in Melbourne.
“It is probably the biggest exhibition we have ever held here,” says the gallery’s creative director Alison Williams.
“Putting it together is daunting – some of the crates are the size of a VW.
“There has been lots to do, we have gutted the gallery and painted to it all black and moved other things around to create the space.”
The exhibition will take people behind the scenes of the television series with images, an audio-visual screen and touchscreens. Friday’s launch will include the opportunity to enjoy a three-course dinner while being entertained by Gameroi musician Kauri Munro-Greentree, guest speaker Uncle Mark Flanders and a screening of Cleverman. Tickets for the launch are $110 each and bookings are essential on 6640 7104.
