Alyson’s Wonderland: Art in the Heart of Coffs
Alykat Creative Gallery Studio is a hidden gem in the heart of Coffs Harbour. Primarily showcasing the creations of designer and illustrator Alyson Pearson, the space also features the work of local artists in the same vein. The internet is awash with eye-catching images, vying for attention. But Alyson’s hope is that people can immerse themselves in the colour, wonder and quirk of her gallery then leave feeling inspired. Step inside Alyson’s wonderland…
The Dream Gallery
The exterior of Alykat Creative Gallery Studio is a bright pink and green mural featuring larger-than-life rainbow lorikeets. Inside, the pops of bold colour continue. Alyson Pearson opened the space in 2020 and says it’s her dream gallery.
“Years ago, I said I’d love a Ken Done-esque alley-cat gallery that is in-your-face and colourful,” she explains. “I’ve really enjoyed taking over this space with bright colours and quirky things.”
While Alykat Gallery has hosted group exhibitions, the walls are currently lined with many of Alyson’s pieces. She’s still getting used to the feeling of featuring her own work and it’s something many artists can relate to. But Alyson agrees it’s quite satisfying to be able to print at a larger scale and fill the ornate frames she’s been collecting for years.
“I love complimenting my own work by showcasing others as well,” Alyson explains. “That’s when it really works in here, I think.”
Whimsical and Weird
The North Coast is brimming with creative talents, eager to share their handiwork. But Alyson is keen to stay true to her vision and maintain the look and feel she initially set out to curate. She’s proud of the whimsical and weird aesthetic. The laneway location adds to the feeling of stumbling across a hidden cave full of treasures.
“It’s something different, especially for somewhere like Coffs,” she explains. “At the moment I don’t think we have anything like this.”
Alyson is excited to continue bringing artists together and hosting community-building events at Alykat Gallery. She’s looking forward to future collaborations while acknowledging that she must make time to fill her own cup.
“It’s all very much a work in progress – growing and changing all the time!” Alyson says. “It’s my hope that people keep coming in and supporting local artists.”
