The Ambassador: Up Late at Culture Hub – Coffs Harbour

If you have enjoyed the chance to see the Eugenia Lim: The Ambassador exhibition at the Culture Hub in Coffs Central, now you can hear about it from the artist herself. Friday will see the venue host an artist talk involving Eugenia, 4A Centre for Contemporary Asian Art executive director Bridie Moran, and Coffs Harbour Regional Gallery curator Chloe Waters.

The talk was originally intended to be a face-to-face event, however, COVID-19 restrictions mean Eugenia can’t come to Coffs Harbour so instead it will be a virtual meeting of minds.

“We thought the COVID problems were all over, but not so,” Chloe says. “Instead the talk will be shown in the gallery as a Zoom webinar that will be projected for everyone to view so they can all listen to the artist and have the chance to see the art another time before the exhibition ends.”

Eugenia Lim: The Ambassador is a three-part project for which Eugenia transforms herself into the ‘Ambassador’, a Mao-like persona who sits halfway between truth and fantasy. She takes on new roles in uncovering the Australian-Asian narrative, drilling down into racial politics, the social costs of manufacturing and the role of architecture in shaping society. Ahead of the exhibition’s close on Saturday to conclude its a two-year national tour, Friday’s talk will cover everything from the early conception of Lim’s Ambassador, getting the show together for tour, themes of national identity, impacts of commodification and suburbanisation, and see what is in store for The Ambassador in the near future.

The ticketed event will run from 4pm to 6pm, with the talk to take place about 4.45pm.

The exhibition will have its final day on show on Saturday before it makes way for the highly anticipated 2019 Archibald Prize exhibition that will be on display in both the Coffs Harbour Regional Gallery and Culture Hub
